General Information
Welcome to our 9th year of Math Superstars at St. Timothy’s! Throughout the 25-week program, all of our students in grades 1 – 6 will be given a weekly set of problems to solve. Problems vary in difficulty, with the easiest problems marked by one star and more difficult problems (or problems with multiple parts) awarded more stars. As students accumulate points for correct answers they are periodically rewarded with prizes and certificates. Check the STS web site for more information and a schedule of handouts.
Some things to remember about Math Superstars:
- worksheets are due on Tuesday. They are handed out and collected in the classroom.
- partially-completed worksheets may be turned in for credit
- no credit will be given for worksheets that are more than 1 week late
- partial credit may be awarded for incorrect solutions if the student shows his/her work
- 360 points, out of a possible 500 points, earn the Math Superstar pizza party in May; 420 points earn a Free Dress Day!
- make sure your child knows his/her teacher’s policy for Math Superstars (e.g., some teachers assign it as homework, others may give extra-credit for participation)
- you may help your child, but please DO NOT GIVE THE ANSWER.
Your role in Math Superstars is to encourage and facilitate problem solving. You may help by reading the problem, explaining new words, suggesting a strategy, offering counters or manipulatives, or listening as your child shares his or her thinking. Please do not give the answer. In order for this program to be effective, the thinking must be done by the student. Please encourage your child to turn in the worksheet, even if it is only partially completed.
2000-10 Schedule
Worksheets will be handed out on these dates. Worksheets are due one week after being handed out. Late worksheets will be accepted up to only one week from due date. (i.e. two weeks after being handed out)
