October 27th, day off from school ACTIVITY
Dear Parents,
I spoke briefly to you at Back to School night about developing a program to bring St. Timothy's middle schoolers to a deeper level in their understanding of their Catholic faith. The program will be four pronged: educational, spiritual, service and social. The spiritual will be an overlay of all we do. The educational, while primarily in the classroom, will be carried through in the service and social programs. I propose to average one major service and social program per quarter and I hope you and your child will participate. The involvement of parents is critical, particularly, at this stage as they move into adolescence. I would like to schedule our first activity for Monday, October 27. St. Timothy has a school holiday for a teacher's conference.
We will be taking the 6th-8th grade students to Camp Highroad in Middleburg , VA. Camp Highroad is run by the United Methodist Church and specializes in leadership and teamwork development. The program we would like to do is the Ropes and Initiatives Course:
ROPES & INITIATIVES COURSE (Year Round)
The Ropes & Initiatives Course is a program in which small groups of people are challenged to work together and trust one another while overcoming increasingly more difficult obstacles. It includes development of skills in problem solving, group building and self appreciation. The events vary in degree of physical and/or mental challenge. They range from those events with virtually no perceived risk to those events with a high perceived risk. The Ropes & Initiatives program is supervised and safe, yet challenging and fun. The sense of accomplishment, both for individuals and groups, is tied to the basic Highroad goal of growth in living and experience.
One event which is part of the 4 hour courses is the Zip Wire Complex. This is a series of events ranging from ground level to a platform 40 feet up a tree. The event culminates with a ride down a 400 foot cable. Participants are secured to a special harness and carefully supervised throughout the event.
We propose to leave at 9:00 a.m. from St. Timothy School and return around 5:00. Our school buses will not be available that day so we would need drivers that will also serve as chaperones. The cost would be $30 and would include the Ropes and Initiatives course and lunch. We will begin the adventure with Mass. At this point we need to know how much participation we can expect. Please respond to your roommother by Friday, October 17 and let us know if:
- Your child will attend
- You will attend. If you can take students with you, how many can you fit in your car?
This promises to be an exciting day that I think will not only be fun, but productive. I look forward to getting to know you and your children in this coming year.
